TOP ARTIST IN ZOO VENTURE

An artist whose paintings fetch thousands at auction is to put Marwell Zoo on the art world map.

Pip McGarry has been appointed to be the zoo's first artist-in-residence.

As well as holding regular exhibitions, Mr McGarry will conduct workshops for members of the zoo's junior Oryx club and regular art classes.

Until last year however, the 43 year-old father of two worked for the Department of Employment.

Painting was just a hobby inspired by a lecture given by leading artist David Shepherd more than 20 years ago.

Mr McGarry had been holding occasional workshops at the zoo, then last year his passion for painting took over and he gave up his job and his regular salary.

Yesterday, he spent some time getting to know his prospective subjects.

The animals from the zoo hold no fear for Mr McGarry who has painted everything from big cats to penguins.
He recently went on safari to Tanzania where he studied African animals in their natural habitat.

"Through the help of the staff at Marwell, I have been able to pursue my dream of being a professional wildlife artist," he said.

"Twenty years ago I was inspired by the work of David Shepherd and now my paintings are on sale side-by-side with his which is a great feeling."

Mr McGarry will set up a studio at Marwell and it is hoped that once the zoo's new educational centre is built, a permanent exhibition hall can be opened for the work of the wildlife art society which Mr McGarry will create.

Dr Miranda Stevenson, Marwell's director said: "We are thrilled that Pip will be bringing this new dimension to Marwell and we are proud to be associated with an artist of such outstanding talent."
